convert 2 wheel recumbent to a trike

Post by skylarsmith on Fri Jan 08, 2010 1:25 pm

    HI!
I want to convert my Haluzak Horizon 2 wheel recumbent to a trike. Does anyone have experience doing this? Or does anybody have info for me? I need a front axle of some type and another fork/wheel& brake& all the rest.
I think I can use some bike tubing from an old bike for the axle and attach it to the place on the frame where the existing front wheel is. then I'll need a connecting arm for both front wheels.
I am not an engineer, nor have I any experience building machines. I have operated machines all my life, so I am familiar with them.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
    Skylar

Take a look at the Atomic Zombie site. Here is their link..... http://www.atomiczombie.com/

They have plans on how to build tadpole trikes using other bikes. I built a variation of their Streetfox tadpole and it was a blast to build. I used a Sun Speedster CX for some of the parts and had to fabricate others. But it was so much fun building and when done, you can take pride in riding something you built instead of bought.

You will need welding equipment like oxy / Acetylene or a mig welder along with a hand grinder and a drill. Anyone can do it with a bit of knowledge and determination.

It took me a couple of months to finish it as it was just a part time thing working on it three days a week for a couple of hours each week.

Not sure if converting is a good idea though. Building from scratch using parts from your recumbent would probably be easier as recumbents are not easily converted to a trike.....unless you are thinking of a Delta type....then maybe it would be easier.

I would think it would be better to check the classifieds here and at BROL and see if someone would want to swap a trike for your recumbent. I've been thinking about building a trike to but it took me so long to build my bentech that I've been checking to see what people have to offer at the classified sections of these forums. Good Luck!
